Cases of cheating in the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations have been reported with several teachers, students and security officers being arrested.
Fraudsters working in collusion with corrupt education and security officials have been implicated.

When the materials are collected from the distribution centers early in the morning, the crooks obtain the contents of the examinations and share them with their networks via various social media platforms.
They request money from candidates or teachers, which is then quickly transferred to their bank accounts.
One of the syndicates has also received payments via a Pay Bill number registered with a bank.
Yesterday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that they had busted an exam syndicate and arrested four college students involved in the sale of question papers.
The breaches were blamed on an elaborate web of fraudsters comprised of school heads, security agents, parents, and college students.
According to the detectives, some containers are opened before the official time of 6.30 am in order to gain access to the exam material.
The materials are then sold to crooks for as little as Sh500. Some charge Sh5,000 per paper, with a discounted rate of Sh20,000 for the entire exam.
Gideon Kibet Tanui alias Evans Kipruto, an Information Technology student at Baringo Technical College, has been identified as the main suspect.
On the first day of exams, he was arrested in his rented room next to the college distributing the English paper, which was in session, as well as Chemistry Paper I, which was scheduled for mid-morning.
Mr Kibet led detectives to his accomplice, Mr Kevin Kiprotich Langat, a Rongo University Bachelor of Arts student. On Thursday, he was too arrested.
Mr Langat, in turn, led detectives to Justice Leting, a first-year university student who was also arrested while distributing the Kiswahili newspaper, which was in the process of being distributed.
He was also preparing answers for the Chemistry practical paper, which was due the following day.
We couldn’t tell whether the Chemistry paper Mr Leting was caught with was the same one the candidates took on Friday.
“Shockingly, Leting’s mobile phone had the entire KCSE examination material,” the DCI statement stated.
Although the con artists claim to have all of the exam materials, it was discovered that they only start distributing them shortly before or after 8 a.m.
The answers are worked out by the college students and shared with those who pay. Last week, while the paper was in session, one Telegram group with 5,800 members was freely sharing examination photos.
It was deactivated after the Nation reported it to Telegram and the DCI.
The DCI has warned that they are investigating all subscribers to the suspect Telegram and WhatsApp groups in preparation for legal action.
Knec CEO David Njeng’ere and Education CS George Magoha have constantly denied that the examination had been leaked and blamed corrupt officials involved in its administration for the reported cases of malpractice.
Yesterday, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha introduced five new tough rules. He directed that school gates remain open in order for senior officials to conduct random inspections.
He also directed security officers to sit in positions where they could see the examination materials for the second paper while the morning paper was being administered.
When compared to the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examinations, the KCSE examinations have the most cases of malpractice.
Three people have been arrested in Kericho for assisting in the KCSE exam cheating.
The three, two chemistry teachers and a lab technician, are assisting police with their investigations and are scheduled to appear in court.
They were apprehended on Friday after being discovered with mobile phones containing this year’s Chemistry practical paper.

Detectives investigating claims of KCSE 2022 examination malpractice arrested four college students for allegedly taking part in KCSE examination malpractice via Whatsapp and Telegram messaging platforms.
The trio are from Kipkebur Secondary School in Sigowet, Soin constituency, according to Kericho county commissioner Kamau Karungo.
Leonard Korir, 28, and Collins Yegon Cheruiyot, 27, were identified as the teachers. Erick Kiplangat, 30, is the lab technician.
Amos Kirwa, the principal of the schools, also recorded a statement with Sondu police and was later released.
Exam irregularities continue to plague the exam, with two varsity students arrested last week for impersonation.
CS Education George Magoha stated that he had allowed two students who were discovered with mobile phones on the first day of the test to continue with the exam.
He did, however, say that anyone caught assisting or cheating will bear their own cross.
Since 2016, the government has implemented stringent measures to combat cheating in national examinations.

“Those who have attempted to breach the sanctity of our examinations, we have arrested them. They will face the full force of the law and have themselves to blame,” Magoha said at Alliance High School on Friday.
On Monday, candidates will begin their second week of KCSE.
On Monday, students will take Mathematics PP2 and Biology PP1 before moving on to Kiswahili PP3 and Religious Education PP1.
