Students Who Fractured Teacher’s Hand Finally Arrested

Two Form Four students from Maraba Secondary School in Nandi County’s Aldai Constituency were arrested for assaulting their teacher.

The two are accused of assaulting their Biology and Agriculture teacher after following him home late at night and breaking his right hand with blunt objects.

The teacher who reprimanded Josphat Kiplimo, 22, and Collins Kipruto, 18, for disrupting the lunchtime queue is said to have enraged them.

The incident sparked outrage among education stakeholders, prompting police to arrest the two students, who are currently being held at Kobujoi Police Station awaiting arraignment.

The arrests came a day after the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) stormed the Nandi South education offices, demanding that the two be charged.

If their safety was not guaranteed, the union threatened to withdraw their members from the school.

Rowdy students at Maraba Mixed Secondary School in Aldai sub-county attacked the teacher after a disagreement over instructions to maintain order when food was served in the school dining hall.

The boys claimed that the teacher would always harass them whenever they went to be served meals by insisting on queuing rather than scrambling for food.

Some students kidnapped and assaulted him late Friday evening.

Following the incident, teachers demanded the students’ arrest, led by Nandi County Kuppet secretary Paul Rotich and other union officials.

Mr Rotich demanded the transfer of all Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employees at Maraba Secondary School unless the Ministry of Education and the police assured them of their safety while at school.

It has since been revealed that in 2021, a female teacher at the school was assaulted by wild students over the same issue of queuing for school meals.

Another female teacher at a school in Tindiret sub-county was slapped by students, but no action was taken, according to Kuppet officials.

Officials from the Kuppets have threatened to boycott secondary schools where students act with impunity.

They stormed the school and rallied Aldai teachers to march to the local education offices, where they met with sub-county directors and expressed their outrage at the students’ actions.
