Magoha lauds mandatory drug testing for students.
On Thursday, December 30, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha issued a statement regarding the mandatory drug test directive issued by Maranda High School to its students.
This comes after the school administration sent a letter to parents informing them that when the institution reopens on January 3, 2022, all students will be required to take a drug test and present proof of the same.
Magoha, speaking to the press in Mombasa, welcomed the move, stating that it was past time for students to be scrutinized in light of the recent spike in cases of disruptive behavior.
According to the CS, a large number of high school students have been exposed to drugs.
“A drug test is thoroughly in order because children are using drugs. Are you doubting it?” He posed.
Magoha blamed the current rise in student indiscipline on the absence of parents in their children’s lives and consistent pampering.
He accused parents of being passive participants in their children’s development. According to the Education Director, the majority of them are substituting money for attention.
“Children do not need money, they need your time. You must allow your child to go through life,” he remarked.
Magoha declared that the government would deal harshly with students who cause trouble at school, including those who set fire to dormitories, labelling them criminals.

On December 27, he urged school principals to allow disruptive students who do not wish to attend school to leave. He argued that it was preferable for a few students to leave school and take their exams at home rather than destroying property and disadvantage the rest.
Magoha had previously refused to readmit students who had been expelled from schools on December 18. Despite being served with court orders requiring him to allow students involved in school fires to return to school.
