Girl With 408 KCPE Marks Herds Goats Over Lack Of Fees
Faith Kasungwa has yet to enter Form One despite overcoming obstacles and excelling in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.
Kasungwa, a resident of Kilonzo village in Nzambani, Kitui East, took the exam at Nzambani Primary School. She received 408 points and finished first in her class of 50 students. Unfortunately, the 16-year-parents old’s cannot afford school fees.
Kasungwa has been left tending to her father’s goats as the first term begins. Kasungwa told The Standard that she has stayed at home despite working hard in class to earn a secondary slot.
Her disappointment is that the people she defeated are still in class. Muthale Girls, a national school in Kitui County, sent the girl an admission letter. However, she has not reported due to a lack of school fees.
“When I am not at home I am taking care of our two goats waiting for the sun to set and rise again with the hope of getting a well-wisher to sponsor my education.”
Her parents are in financial difficulty. Kasungwa’s mother, who was previously the sole breadwinner, is no longer able to pay the fees because she no longer works as a housekeeper. Kasungwa, the third child in a family of five, remains hopeful that she will receive assistance. Her father, Maundu Mwanza, stated that he can only feed his family.
“We depend on the rain to sustain our agriculture business. But the rain patterns have been changing and food crops dry every season,” said Mwanza, who harvested nothing in the last season.

The man has become a hawker in the nearby shopping center. The family’s firstborn works as a housekeeper in Kitengela, and the second child took the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam last year and received a C.
Kasungwa is supposed to pay Sh45,000 in fees and an additional Sh20,000 in shopping, according to the letter from Muthale Girls. The girl’s ambition is to become a lawyer and assist families in resolving land disputes, which she claims are common in her community.
“Muthale is a good school that will offer a good learning environment to enable me to excel in KCSE and join university to study law,” Kasungwa said.
