FAWE To Help Fight Teenage Pregnancies.The Forum for African Women Educators (FAWE) has joined the fight against teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates in Kenya.During a stakeholders conference in Narok county, FAWE spokesperson Monica Morara stated that the group has developed a program called ‘Tamatisha,’ which aims to encourage teens to reduce early births in Kenya during and after the Covid-19 crisis.“We are in the process of making an assessment on current teenage pregnancies and school drop outs and advice apt solutions while laying the groundwork for future assessments by providing a detailed overview of the situation at the beginning of the Tamatisha,” said Ms. Morara.Similar programs are being held in Nairobi, Kajiado, and Machakos Counties, where the group is lobbying for a complete transition from primary to secondary school.The conference was conducted at a Narok hotel and was attended by Narok North Deputy County Commissioner Silas Gatobu and numerous department leaders, including those in charge of gender, children, education, and youth affairs.Gatobu urged stakeholders to coordinate their efforts in order to minimize duplication of efforts in order to be effective in eliminating adolescent pregnancies.“All stakeholders fighting teenage pregnancies should come out in the open to show what they are doing so that we can avoid a repetition of the same activities. We need to speak in one voice to help our girls complete their education,” said Gatobu.At the same time, he urged village elders, cultural leaders, and religious leaders to become involved in the struggle to abolish the sin.ALSO READ:The forum noted that, despite rising evidence of earlier sexual debuts, attempts to address sexual and reproductive issues are hampered by parents, religious leaders, political leaders, and other stakeholders.According to the 2014 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, Narok County has 40 percent more adolescent pregnancy than the national average of 18 percent.FAWE To Help Fight Teenage Pregnancies
