Students Beat Up Teacher, Fracture His Arm

Teachers from Maraba Secondary School in Nandi County marched to the Aldai Sub-county education offices on Tuesday to protest what they called workplace insecurity.

This comes after students at the school assaulted and severely injured a teacher last week.

The teachers, led by county officials from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), left the school on Tuesday, demanding that the students responsible for the act be punished.

“He (the teacher) was attacked using a blunt object,” said Rotich.

“He has a fractured hand, and injuries on the head and knees.” The teachers say despite reporting the incident to the local police, no action has been taken against the students

According to the teachers, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened, as a female teacher was also beaten by students last year.

Led by Kipchumba Rotich, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) executive secretary Nandi branch, the teachers presented their grievances to the subcounty education office.

“We are going to use all means to ensure that justice is served for Mwalimu. We are no lesser beings,” said Salim Bhakit, the union’s treasurer.

“This issue emanates from homes. Parents are unable to raise their children in a disciplined manner and they thus relegate the duty to teachers,” opined KUPPET official Salim Bhakit.

“Previously, parents used to storm schools and eject teachers over poor results but the situation has now deteriorated.”
