Student Hit By Stray Bullet In 2016 Yet To Receive Ksh.14M Compensation.
Quinter Amondi was hit by a stray bullet four years and nine months ago, changing the course of her life.
The bullet was fired by a prison warden from the Migori GK Prison, who was one of several wardens pursuing an escaped convict.
Following the incident, Amondi was hospitalized for four months before returning to school with obvious learning difficulties.
Her father filed a lawsuit against the warden after she took her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams in 2018.
After a legal battle to obtain justice, they were awarded Ksh.14 million in damages and Ksh.73,500 in special damages.
Amondi, who is now 21, has yet to receive a penny of the money awarded to him. Her family has now asked the Attorney General’s office to pay the agreed-upon compensation.
Early in the morning, Amondi, a student at St.Ulanda Albert’s Girls High School, was watching a handball game at Migori Boys High School.
According to Ms Amondi, an inmate named Rodgers Odhiambo stormed into the field with no intention of cooling off, trailed by a team of Migori GK prison wardens.
Odhiambo, who escaped from prison with the intention of fooling the wardens by blending in with the student crowd and possibly deterring them from opening fire.
Unfortunately, Simon Dunda, one of the warders, opened fire on the fleeing Odhiambo, striking Amondi in the left eye.
“That bullet maimed my daughter. She was admitted at MTRH for three weeks. Her entire left eye was removed and her attending doctor told us that the hole exposed her to meningitis…all we wanted for her was reconstructive surgery,” said Amondi’s father Mr Fred Ojwando in an interview with Daily Nation.
He now claims that they are seeking compensation to assist them in affording reconstructive surgery to seal the left eye and repair extensive damage – Amondi’s nose was pushed to the left due to nasal injuries.
Mr. Ojwando says he only wants justice for his daughter, a first-year hospitality student at Utalii College.

“We have been pursuing the compensation for almost three years. The office of the Attorney General received the court’s judgment but they are yet to approve the payment,” he added.
Mr. Ojwando says he only wants justice for his daughter, a first-year hospitality student at Utalii College.
“All her dreams are now a mirage. All we want is justice. Bwana AG please fast-track our compensation.”
