Security Tightened in Baringo ahead of schools reopening

The National Police Service (NPS) has strengthened security in Baringo County in preparation for the reopening of schools the next week.

Multiple schools in the county were closed owing to the insecurity caused by banditry attacks.

On Wednesday, the Rift Valley multi-agency security team led by Regional Police Commander Tom Odero continued “Operation Fungua Shule” exercises in the Chemorongion, Kapindasum, Mukutani, and Arabal regions.

Maintaining the current conducive atmosphere for the resumption of study and greater freedom of movement for the locals has required the concerted efforts of the multi-agency security team and cooperation from the local community.

In addition to recruiting and deploying NPR Officers to assist the multi-agency security team, the police have increased patrols and added security to the schools.

The Regional Police Commander also visited Arabal GSU Camp, where he praised the officers’ commitment and determination, as indicated by the operation’s success.

At the same time, NPS commends the public for its support of the multi-agency security team thus far as it seeks to restore calm and normalcy to the region.

Baringo County in Kenya has been affected by banditry for several years. The bandits, who are often from the pastoralist communities of the Pokot and Samburu, engage in cattle rustling, kidnappings, and other criminal activities.

This has led to a state of insecurity in the area, and has affected the education of children in the region as well. Schools have been closed, teachers have been kidnapped, and students have been forced to stay at home.

The government of Kenya has attempted to address the issue by deploying security forces to the area, but the problem persists.

The causes of banditry in Baringo County are complex and multifaceted. Some of the main causes are poverty, lack of employment opportunities, and competition over resources, such as land and water. Climate change and population growth have also contributed to the problem.

Efforts to resolve the problem include, disarmament, talks with the community leaders and elders, as well as providing alternative livelihoods, education and health services.
