School Closed Following Teacher's Killing

On Tuesday, Baragoi Secondary School was closed indefinitely due to rising tensions following the murder of a teacher.

Its 135 students and all teachers were ordered to leave, amid fears that the surrounding communities would retaliate.

Samburu County Commissioner Henry Wafula stated that the security team decided to temporarily close the school to keep students and teachers safe.

Mr Wafula told the Nation that an isolated incident had left teachers and students terrified.

The attack also caused panic in the Samburu North region.

“We decided to temporarily suspend learning operations so that tension is relieved. We are going to open the school as soon as possible, preferably at the end of the week,” Mr Wafula said.

He stated that officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), Administration Police (AP), and Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) had been dispatched to quell the violence and potential retaliation.

The attack has heightened concerns about tribal cohesion in the region’s fragile tribal patchwork, just as Kenya prepares for elections on August 9, which are less than two weeks away.

Mr Wafula stated that the government is fighting banditry in the region. He added that police were looking into the motive for the teacher’s murder, Cyrus Kirukura.

“We are planning peace meetings together with local leaders in the region to neutralise bandit activities and we call on the public to support our efforts,” he added.

Following the chilling murder of the young teacher, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) wants its members serving in banditry-prone areas of Baragoi to be withdrawn immediately.

Samburu County Kuppet executive secretary William Lenkoyiap issued an ultimatum to the government to address runaway insecurity and advised teachers to stay away from schools until the state ensures their safety.

He stated that the lives of teachers working in Baragoi are in danger due to sporadic attacks in the area.

“As teachers, we condemn the act with the strongest terms possible. On this we demand that teachers from these danger zones of Baragoi be evacuated with immediate effect,” Mr Lenkoyiap said in a statement.

“We cannot risk our teachers working in these hostile areas.“

Teachers in the area were also asked to leave by the unionist while they awaited further instructions from the union’s national office and their employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Mr. Lenkoyiap stated that Baragoi is the most dangerous place to work, and the deaths of more than 42 national police officers reflect the volatility index of the area.

He also asked Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to help teachers working in the volatile region find a way forward.

Mr Lenkoyiap said 40 armed police officers were lost in Baragoi from the same group of criminals who have taken the law into their own hands.

He praised Mr Kirukura as a young, hardworking man who was passionate about his work.

"The brutal hand of characters who adhere to no law has robbed us of a hardworking English and literature colleague,” he said.

Mr Kirukura was killed while on his way to the hospital by assailants who sprayed him with bullets.

The teacher was killed just 200 metres from the school’s main gate, a few minutes after midday, according to Baragoi High Principal Elijah Letakai. He was on his way to a hospital in Baragoi because he was feeling sick.

He reported for duty on Monday but began complaining of aches and sought permission to seek treatment.

Since the early 2000s, endemic insecurity in Baragoi has had an impact on the school’s academic performance.

Enrollment had also dropped dramatically, and parents had begun withdrawing their children from school out of fear for their children’s lives.

In 2015, an unidentified gunman shot and killed a school watchman as he stepped out of the gate to go home in the evening. He was also a reservist for the police force.
