Prof. George Magoha, cabinet secretary for education, has announced that all basic learning institutions will reopen on Thursday, August 18.

The students will return to school after the institutions close early on August 2nd to allow for adequate preparation and conduct of the general election.

Previously, the ministry stated that learning would resume on August 11th before extending it to August 15th.

The unapologetic CS says in the press release,  “…communication supersedes any earlier communication on the re-opening of basic education institutions.”

“Following the conduct of our national election on Tuesday 9th August 2022, the process of tallying is still ongoing.

“Therefore, following further consultations, I hereby convey the government’s decision on the suspension of the reopening of all basic education institutions with effect from Monday 15th August 2022 until Thursday 18th August 2022,” he said

Magoha had issued a statement on Wednesday, August 10, urging parents to disregard any prior communications indicating that schools would reopen on August 11.

Following consultations with the EBC, the CS stated that they had been informed that the tallying exercise would last a few days and that ballots would still be moved from learning institutions that were used as polling stations.

“On 1st August 2022, I ordered the early closure of all Basic Education Institutions to allow for adequate preparation and conduct of the General Elections.”

“We indicated that the reopening would be on the 11th of August 2022. We have however been informed that the process of tallying ballots may still be ongoing on the aforementioned date,” Magoha stated.

The CS also apologized to parents and guardians for the inconvenience and informed education stakeholders that the safety of all students was a top priority.

“We apologize for any inconvenience occasioned by these changes and ask for your indulgence, as we work through ensuring the safety and comfort of learners through this period.

On Monday, August 8, CS Magoha stated that students will only return to school after the midterm break if the environment is safe following the General Election.

He stated that the initial date of Thursday, August 11, was subject to change depending on the outcome of the election.

The CS, on the other hand, assured parents that their children would be safe because the government would monitor the elections and make adjustments as needed.

“Assuming everything else is constant, the children should go back to school on Thursday, August 11. However, the date may change depending on the political environment.”

“For the love of our children, if we feel that they should stay home for one or two more days, we will then pronounce ourselves at that time.

“The public should not be worried at all because we will be on the watch,” he stated.
