Schools Hike 2023 Fees

Private academies have increased tuition by up to 47 percent before the start of the new academic year this month to preserve their revenue from the rising cost of living.

The schools blame the increases on rising inflation, which softened to 9.1% in December after reaching a 67-month high of 9.6% in October, as households battle with the high cost of goods and services, resulting in higher fees that will further strain family resources.

Some schools informed parents and guardians of an increase in tuition fees and other charges, such as transport.

According to a letter from the Rophine Junior School in Utawala, Nairobi, dated November 29, 2022, parents were informed of an anticipated tuition fee increase of 7.5% and an increase in transportation fees of 10% to 15% based on the route beginning this month.

A parent observes that no explanation has been provided for the increased tuition of Sh63,500, or almost 47%, for the child entering Grade 7, the level that signifies the beginning of Junior Secondary under the competency-based curriculum (CBC).

The government calendar indicates that schools will reopen on January 23.

In most schools, parents of learners entering Junior Secondary will be required to purchase new uniforms, textbooks, and other learning resources.

The tuition fees for pre-primary education (PP1 and PP2) through Grade 6 (the end of primary school under the CBC) at St Bakhita School have increased by six per cent.

Fredrick Murunga, the school’s chairman, reminded the parents that the tuition increase would allow the institution to continue offering outstanding services to all students.

In 2023, tuition fees at the school will range between Sh59,011 and Sh66,495 per term, based on the student’s grade level, while two-way transport fees would range between Sh10,109 and Sh20,642, depending on the transport zones.

Parents of students attending St Hannah’s Preparatory on Nairobi’s Ngong Road are now required to pay Sh89,300 each term, a 16-per cent increase from the Sh76,800 they paid last year.

Transport charges at the schools increased by 33 per cent to Sh16,000 from Sh12,000 before the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus. The additional charges would affect parents of secondary school learners attending private and public schools.

Parents at Moi Educational Centre High School in Nairobi have been notified that the fee increase is a result of growing inflation.

There will also be a ten cent increase in transport fees.Term Depending on the student’s class, the tuition at Moi Educational Centre High School is between Sh100,000 and Sh120,000.

Following the reinstatement of the normal school calendar, fees for public secondary schools will return to normal, as the Sh8,500 subsidy caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has ended.

According to a circular dated November 15, 2022, issued by the former senior secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education, Julius Jwan, national and extra county schools in seven counties will pay Sh53,554 annually instead of Sh45,000.

The seven counties are Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika, and Eldoret (Uasin Gishu).

According to a bulletin for Tenwek High School, a national school in Bomet County, Term One fees would increase to Sh26,000 from Sh21,500 last year.

In the notice dated November 2, 2022, additional charges for uniforms for Form 1 and Form 3 learners are included at Sh5,300.

At Moi Girls, Eldoret, a national school, parents must pay Sh69,554, which is Sh16,000 more than the State-imposed limit of Sh53,554 each year.

At Kabianga High School, an additional national school, pupils in Forms 2 through 4 will pay Sh59,554.

Parents at the extra county school, Nyangwa Boys High School in Embu, would pay Sh40,535 instead of the Sh35,000 they paid the previous year.
