School Officials Arrested as DCI Hunt for Teacher Accused of Whipping Pupil 107 Times

On March 30, a team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations conducted a raid on Riang’ombe Adventist Primary Boarding School.

The aim was to find a teacher who was accused of causing bodily harm to a Grade 4 pupil. Unfortunately, the main suspect managed to escape from the police officers in the early hours of the morning.

However, the detectives were able to arrest four other individuals who were believed to have been involved in covering up the incident. These included the school’s head teacher, deputy head teacher, another Grade 4 class teacher, and the matron.

According to the police commander of Nyamira County, James Mitugo, the matron was the one who had provided the pipe that was used to whip the Grade 4 pupil 107 times.

The teacher had allegedly used a plastic pipe, and the injuries sustained by the pupil were described as intense.

The suspects then attempted to cover up their crime by falsifying the class attendance register to indicate that the pupil had been present in class.

However, this was exposed by other pupils who confided in the investigators that the victim had been locked up in the dormitory.

The police commander stated that the child had been injured on March 26 and had been locked up in the dormitory ever since. He was unable to walk or sit due to the severity of his injuries.

During the investigation, the head teacher and deputy head teacher provided conflicting information about who was in charge of the school at the time of the incident. This further complicated the investigation.

Various stakeholders, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Teachers Service Commission, and Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, had called for action to be taken in response to the incident.

In conclusion, the raid on Riang’ombe Adventist Primary Boarding School highlights the severity of the physical abuse that can occur in educational institutions.

The fact that the suspects attempted to cover up their crime by falsifying documents demonstrates the lengths to which some individuals will go to avoid accountability.

It is essential for stakeholders to remain vigilant and take appropriate action to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
