After the opening of a 1,000-capacity Vocational Training center in Gatong’ora ward on friday, school leavers in Ruiru Sub County are optimistic about continuing their education.

On seven acres donated by the community, the national government built the Sh57 million center, the first such public institution in the populated constituency.

At least 100 additional students have enrolled for classes that will begin later this month, according to area MP Simon King’ara, who spoke at the opening.

Before a local management board takes over, he said, the institution will be managed by Kabete National Polytechnic in Nairobi.

King’ara urged school leavers who were willing to take up technical skills to enroll at the facility so they would have the tools they needed to make money.

Mechanics, welding, electrical, plumbing, and computer courses are just a few of the subjects that will be taught at the institution.

“Our youth and school leavers now have a chance to advance their skills by acquiring the necessary skills which shall enable them to get jobs or become self-employed,” he said.

The member of parliament also praised President William Ruto for directing the equipping of the center with a budget of Sh100 million, saying that the facility will significantly help the local economy in the near future.

He was accompanied by area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Margret Mbugua, who ensured that security authorities would be on the lookout to ensure that drug dealers were kept away from the institution and urged people to assist.

Principal Okumu Odhiambo of Kabete National Polytechnic urged the community to utilize the institution and establish enterprises, saying it lacks dormitories and kitchens.

Residents, led by Peter Karanja, praised the initiative, saying it will have a significant effect on the local economy.
