PSC Appeals for Funds to Hire 1,000 TVET Tutors
The Public Service Commission (PSC) is advocating for funding to hire Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers in Kenya.
PSC Chair, Amb. Anthony Muchiri, has requested the National Assembly’s Labour Committee to prioritize funding for the recruitment process, which has been transferred from the Ministry of Education to PSC.
Speaking during the 2023 Budget Policy Statement presentation to the Committee at a hotel in Nairobi, the PSC Chair emphasized that having enough trainers in TVET institutions would be beneficial to the youth as they would acquire technical skills and become self-employed.
The government has already made arrangements to hire 1,000 tutors for 144 TVET schools, with 887 tutors being assigned to Technical Training Institutes (TTIs), 79 to national polytechnics, and 34 to special needs institutes.
Earlier this year, President William Ruto also announced his administration’s plan to recruit more tutors in TVET colleges throughout the country.
Initially, the government intended to hire 3,000 tutors to address the current gap of 6,500 trainers. However, President Ruto stated that they would begin by hiring 2,000 tutors to ensure that they keep up with the necessary skills and competencies, particularly in the field of engineering.
The PSC’s call for funding to recruit TVET trainers is in line with the government’s commitment to developing technical and vocational skills in the country. By investing in TVET education, the government hopes to empower the youth to become self-reliant and contribute to the growth of the economy.
Overall, the recruitment of TVET trainers will be essential in filling the skills gap in the country and addressing the high levels of unemployment.
Additionally, the training provided will equip the youth with relevant skills that are in high demand, thus boosting their chances of securing employment or starting their businesses.
