PS Kipsang Issues JSS Uniforms Directive
The Education Principal Secretary (PS), Belio Kipsang, has recently issued a directive for uniform vendors to make sure that the uniforms for Junior Secondary School (JSS) learners are reasonably priced during the transition to grade seven.
During an inspection of the grade seven transition activities in Kajiado County, the PS emphasized that the uniforms should be of high quality and would help to enhance the learners’ morale for their school activities.
He warned that the uniforms should not be expensive but must be of good quality for all JSS learners.
In addition, the PS encouraged schools not to discriminate against JSS learners who don’t have uniforms and to give parents sufficient time to purchase the uniforms for their children.
He also cleared the air regarding the placement of JSS learners, stating that their performance in the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) would not be the deciding factor.
All grade six graduates will have a place in JSS regardless of their KPSEA exam results, he affirmed.
The PS also reassured Kenyans that the government is working towards ensuring the availability of skilled teachers by working in conjunction with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
He wants to assure all JSS learners that they are in safe hands and that the government will make sure there is an adequate number of teachers per school to implement the new curriculum.
His directive on uniforms follows an earlier warning from the Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary, Moses Kuria, instructing school heads not to dictate from which vendor parents should buy uniforms.
Grade seven learners were expected to begin school on Monday, January 30, however, there were fears of inadequate preparations in some public schools. Nevertheless, the government remains committed to ensuring a seamless transition to fully implement the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).
