Professor Walingo Reinstated as Maasai Mara University vice-chancellor but on suspension
Professor Mary Walingo has been reinstated as vice-chancellor of Maasai Mara University, but she will remain suspended until the conclusion of a corruption case filed against her in 2020.
Kennedy Kerei, the chairman of the university’s council, said in a statement that the decision complies with a directive issued by the Public Service Commission on September 6, 2022.
“In accordance with the aforementioned decision, the Maasai Mara University Council wishes to inform you of its 15 February 2023 resolution to reinstate you on suspension,” Kerei wrote in a letter to the VC.
In accordance with the PSC directive, Walingo is to receive half of her salary during the pendency of the case against her or until her contract is lawfully terminated.
“In this regard, your name will henceforth be included in the payroll but you will remain on suspension as per the terms of the decision by the Public Service Commission,” the council chairman added.
In this regard, Kerei stated that her accrued dues since her suspension are being calculated to ensure that she is paid on January 19, 2023, as mandated by the court.
The court reversed the Maasai Mara University’s decision to terminate her employment.
Walingo was expelled in 2019 after an exposé on Citizen TV titled the Mara Heist implicated her in a Sh177 million corruption scandal.
She filed an appeal with the Public Service Commission, which reinstated her to office pending the outcome of the anti-corruption case against her.
Prof Walingo later moved to court after the university failed to reinstate her as directed by the PSC in September 2022 leading to the issuance of fresh orders by a Nakuru court this January.
Justice Hellen Wasilwa of the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled, “”The Petitioner submitted that it has made out a case in her favour, which was well supported by the fourth respondent and unopposed by the other respondents therefore the application should be allowed with costs.”
