Parents Storm School To Eject Principal
On Monday morning, learning was temporarily halted at God Bondo Secondary in Rangwe after parents stormed the school demanding the removal of Principal Tom Mboya.
They blamed the teacher for their poor performance in national exams.
Several parents had previously transferred their children to other schools.
The Ngegu Police Station had to be called in to control the irate parents who had vowed to camp out at the school until their demand was met.
Mr. Mboya is also accused of having a strained relationship with his coworkers.
Some of these issues resulted in students being transferred to nearby schools such as Olare, Ongeti, and Kuoyo Kochia.
God Bondo has 18 students, with no Form One students, despite the parents’ claims that it had over 300 students seven years ago.
On Monday, 16 students reported to class, according to the school register.
Two students were absent, with one female student being reported sick and admitted to a private hospital in Nyangweso trading center.
Seven students in Form Four will take this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams at a different center because God Bondo does not meet the Kenya National Examinations Council’s threshold of 15 candidates.
On July 25, 2022, parents stormed God Bondo Secondary School in Rangwe Sub-county, demanding the transfer of the principal due to allegations of mismanagement.
Form Two has four students, while Form Three has seven.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employs five teachers at the school, with another hired by the board of management.
However, the principal defended himself against the accusations, accusing some of the parents of inciting violence.
Mr Mboya stated that he started at God Bondo in 2014, when there was only one building, but thanks to his good relationship with the National Government Constituency Development Fund, the school now has four new buildings.
He accused the students of not putting in enough effort to succeed in the exams.
“Over the years, Form One admission has reduced. We have never admitted more than 24. I reported to the school when the population was 74,” he said.
He claimed that some Form One students arrived at school with KCPE scores as low as 100.
Mr Mboya went on to say that more information about the school’s problems had been presented to the Ministry of Education and TSC, who will take appropriate action.
However, education officials who visited the school stated that the government would address the parents’ concerns.
Rangwe quality assurance officer Fredrick Nyauncho stated that he would write a report on the parents’ requests and send it to the Ministry of Education.
He received a memo from his parents outlining some of the issues they wanted to be addressed.
