Parents Urged to Enroll Form Four Leavers in TVETs

Abdullatif Essajee, a professor at the University of Nairobi, has urged parents in Mombasa to enroll their children in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions so their children to develop their skills and advance their careers.

Prof. Essajee revealed that, despite the country’s dismal performance, he was appalled by the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results in Mombasa last year.

Prof. Essajee advised parents to prioritize education. During a Qur’an memorization competition organized by Muslim Mercy Youth in Mombasa, he expressed sadness.

He reported that KCSE 2022 showed poor performance across the country, with 80 percent of students not obtaining the marks necessary for university admission.

Prof. Essajee urged parents not to give up when their children do not perform to their expectations on national examinations, as exams should not be used to determine children’s abilities.

He stated that he had seen many disheartened parents when the results came out. He emphasized that it was not the end of the world and that alternatives were available. He advised parents not to demoralize their children and instead suggested that they could either study vocational skills or strive to get into university if they desired.

He continued, “We should not allow an event in the lives of our children to determine or dictate the future of our children. We must have constructive strategies. Even a student with a D+ can realize their university dream.”

Prof. Essajee urged the Governor of Mombasa to prioritize education, noting that the county has 43 Vocational Training Centers (VTC), three of which are government-run.

During the holy month of Ramadan, the holy Qur’an is revealed, and Muslims worldwide intensify their reading of the book to earn rewards from the Creator.

The Qur’an is not the only book to read for us, according to Prof. Essajee, but rather a guide for our entire lives. And Allah has glorified us in everything attributed to the Qur’an.

Shaaban Yasir of Kilifi County, the overall winner of the Qur’an memorization competition with 96 participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi, Rwanda, and Congo, received a cash prize of Sh60,000 and a hajj package from former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to visit the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The Governor of Mombasa awarded Sh288,000 to the 96 participants and Sh102,800 to the 15 judges.
