We Don't Have To Retrain New Teachers On CBC - Magoha

Prof George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, has addressed concerns about the transition of Grade Six students to junior secondary school.
He stated that the teachers who had previously been trained on CBC would be in charge of learning in the junior high schools.
“We do not have to retrain new teachers. We can just retrain the ones that are already teachers. That process is ongoing and the government has money to do it.
Magoha noted that the narrative of teachers not being present is a political narrative adding that Over 230,000 teachers have been trained by the government so far.
“People argue that the training is not enough. As a professor, I can tell you that no training is ever enough,” Magoha expressed.
This comes after MPs and teachers’ unions have raised new concerns about the competency-based curriculum’s (CBC) implementation, citing insufficient capacity among teaching staff.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) informed Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha that her members are unprepared to teach grade seven and eight students who will begin secondary school later this year.

KUPPET officials stated that secondary school teachers had not been exposed to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
"As we speak, secondary school teachers have not been trained on how to teach grade seven and eight pupils,” Julius Korir, the National Vice Chairman of the body said.
Akelo Misori, Secretary-General of KUPPET, stated that CS Magoha is more concerned with the space that grade seven and eight students will occupy when they enter secondary schools than with whether teachers are adequately prepared to teach them.

“The CS is so much concerned about space as we implement the Competency-Based Curriculum. This is something that goes beyond space. We want to see action in the development capacity of our teachers in readiness of grade seven and eight pupils,” Misori said.
The KUPPET SG also stated that secondary school teachers have not attended capacity building workshops in preparation for learners and subsequent implementation of CBC.
“This (CBC) is going to be a disaster and we do not want to wait,” Misori said.
