A letter circulating on the internet claiming that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was transferring headteachers en masse has been deemed fraudulent by the TSC.

The teacher’s employer denied any transfers in a statement dated Thursday, June 2, calling the list “fake.”

According to the list, the teachers’ employer effected headteachers transfers during the half-term break last week.

The Commission’s statement came after teachers expressed concerns about the list, even though some tutors indicated that they had not received official letters from their employers.

Nonetheless, some tutors expressed concern about the time it was taking the Commission to implement some of the approved transfers.

“My status reads acknowledged since November, despite the commission approving it. What is the way forward, please? I am worried about what is going on. "Kindly approve it,” Kennedy Libese stated.

Teachersupdates.co.ke understands that TSC boss Nancy Macharia directed regional education officers to audit the distribution of teachers in schools in April via a circular, citing concerns that some schools had insufficient teachers.

“Any arising movements conducted in the local areas must have a human face and must be well discussed with all relevant offices to ensure equity for all of our learners in tandem with existing staffing norms.“

"If unchecked, this will adversely impact learning outcomes in our learning institutions,” Macharia directed.

TSC launched the decolonization program in 2018, which saw many headteachers transferred across the country. The program’s goal was to relocate teachers who had spent a long time in their respective regions.

However, various teachers’ unions, including the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), opposed the move, claiming that it would negatively impact their families.

Wilson Sossion, former KNUT Secretary General, stated that some chose to retire early, while others moved to county governments and still others were considering their options.

He noted that it  is dangerous and worse than poison to impose policies.

“We are questioning certain policies where we have not been adequately involved. We want the promotion of teachers. It is a right, it is not negotiable or reducible,” former KNUT Secretary General, Wilson Sossion, stated.
