Hassan Noor Hassan, the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) of Education, has declared his interest in the governorship of Mandera County.
In announcing his intention to run, Hassan stated that he has been tried and tested in a number of senior government positions.
Hassan Noor’s bid to succeed Governor Ali Roba adds to the already crowded field, which includes Mandera Speaker Mohamed Khalif, businessman Adan Haji Issack, and banker Ali Kiti.
Governor Ali Roba is currently serving his final term.
The CAS who will run for governor on the Ukur Yattani-led Upya Movement is one of several high-ranking education officials vying for elective positions, including Education CAS Mumina Gallo Bonaya, who is running for the Marsabit Woman Representative seat.
Former EACC CEO and Universities Fund chairman Halakhe Waqo is expected to run for the Isiolo governorship seat, while Dr Kilemi Mwiria, chairman of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), will run for the Tigania West parliamentary seat.
Meanwhile, John Lekakeny Ololtuaa, the Central Regional Director of Education, has resigned from the Public Service after 28 years to run for the Kilgoris Parliamentary seat.
Almost all national officials at the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have expressed an interest in politics.

Executive secretaries in Kisumu, Bungoma, Makueni, and Nandi will run for MP seats, led by KUPPET secretary-general Akello Misori, who is seeking to succeed Governor Cyprian Awiti in Homa Bay County.
Ten branch officials will run for MCA seats.
Chairman Omboko Milemba will defend his Emuhaya parliamentary seat, while treasurer Wicks Mwethi Njenga, vice-chairman Julius Korir, Sammy Chelanga, and Henry Obwocha are vying for Kabete, Soy, Baringo North, and Kitutu Masaba seats.
Gender secretary Catherine Wambilyanga, on the other hand, will defend her Bungoma Women Representative seat.
None of the national officials in the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) are running for political office. At least 13 executive secretaries have expressed interest, however.
Aggrey Namisi of Bungoma East, Patrick Chungani of Kakamega East, and Archedeous Liyayi of Kakamega South will run for parliamentary seats in Western.
Gucha executive secretary Lucy Machuki and Siaya Woman Representative Mildred Ogogo will compete for the positions of Kisii and Siaya Woman Representative in Nyanza, respectively. Cornel Ojuok, Executive Secretary of Homa Bay, and Eliud Ombori (Rachuonyo) will run for MCA seats.

Julius Taitumu, executive secretary of Nyambene, Kasimba Ngui (Yatta), and Macharia Mugwe (Nairobi) will run for MP seats in Eastern.
