Teachers Sexually Molesting Students In Nyamira North
Student sexual harassment has become a widespread issue in educational institutions around the world. This is despite the fact that there are existing global and local laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
Thousands of students, regardless of gender, are affected on a daily basis as a result of this. According to the findings of the study, sexual harassment has a negative impact on students’ self-esteem.
A Teachers Service Commission (TSC) official has stated that Nyamira North sub-county is a hotspot for the sexual molestation of students by tutors.
County Director Wilson Koros lamented that while cases of teachers having sexual relations with their students were on the rise in the area, members of the community were assisting the perpetrators in avoiding punishment by manipulating cases before they were prosecuted.
According to Mr Koros, after cases are reported, some victims’ parents and family members conspire to end the complaints before they are prosecuted, denying the affected children justice.
“It is sad that some parents accept to receive bribes for such heinous crimes against children and allow perpetrators to walk scot-free,” Koros said.
He claimed that the perpetrators evaded justice by coercing victims to retract statements in order to shield themselves.
Koros said this is common, and when a child changes her version of what happened, it becomes difficult to identify the perpetrators. He warned that TSC has put measures in place to combat such cover-ups.
“Henceforth, when these cases are reported, we will move as quickly as possible so as to minimise the possibility of victims getting compromised. The first account the victim gives is relied upon and we will ensure that the girls are separated from abusers and protected to avoid interaction,” Koros said.
Although official data on teacher defilement of students has not been released, Koros stated that between two and five cases are reported to his office on a monthly basis. He is concerned that many people will be compromised before TSC is involved.
TSC deregistered 43 teachers in 2021 for having sexual relations with students.
It is emerging that students across the country are lured into sexual activities by teachers they are close to, and those who offer small favours such as public recognition and monetary gifts.
According to TSC data, Siaya and Murang’a counties had the highest number of teachers accused of defilement in the last three years.
