A fire levelled a dormitory at Masara Mixed Secondary School in Suna West, Migori County last night consuming property worth thousands of money. According to sources, The 9:30 pm inferno began when candidates were in class preparing for their National Exams scheduled for next year. No one was injured in the incident.
The school administration said the burnt dormitory accomodates113 male students but only 76 candidates were in the school during the incident. Their belongings including mattresses and beds were consumed in the inferno.
Students had to spend their night in their classrooms as they had no option. The incident comes just 2 months after a dormitory at Musingu High School, Kakamega, was razed down by the fire.
Clouds of smoke were seen emanating from the Oparanya hostel which was named in honour of Kakamega Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya. There have been concerns about school preparedness to deal with fires as most are not contained in time posing a danger to students.
The cause of the fire has not yet established.
