KNUT and KUPPET Officials enter the political arena.
More teachers’ union officials have declared their intention to run for political office in the 2022 General Election, with five officials from one union declaring their intentions for various elective positions.
Wicks Njenga, National Treasurer of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), is the latest official to declare interest for the Kabete Constituency in Nairobi County on the Chama Cha Kazi ticket.
Secretary-General Akelo Misori has been camped in Homa Bay County since July, where he is running for governor on the Orange Democratic Movement ticket.
Kuppet’s national secretary secondary representative, Mr Edward Obwocha, is running for the Kitutu Masaba seat in Nyamira County; National vice-chairman Julius Korir is running for the Soy Constituency seat in Uasin Gishu County.

Kuppet currently has the most politicians who are also national office union officials and members of Parliament.
Emuhaya’s MP is National Chairman Omboko Milemba. Assistant National Treasurer Ronald Tonui is the MP for Bomet Central Constituency.
Ms Catherine Wambilyanga, the national secretary gender, is the woman representative for Bungoma County. Mr Tonui has served two terms in the House of Representatives.
Speaking to the Nation, Mr Njenga stated that encouraging Kuppet officials to run for elective positions in the General Election will allow them to better serve teachers while also giving them the opportunity to serve their communities.
“We have realised that being a union official is not enough to fight for teachers’ rights, it is in Parliament where the budget allocations are passed and where the laws are made.“ He said
He added that the three Kuppet officials’ presence in Parliament has aided teachers more than they could have if they had not been MPs. For example, he stated that Mr Milemba has been at the forefront of advocating for increased funding for the teaching profession.
"When we are in the Parliament, we will be able to champion more allocations towards employment of more teachers to address the shortage in schools,” said Mr Njenga.
Mr Misori is currently raising funds for the elections through his friends as he prepares to run for governor.
While the Kuppet Constitution does not prohibit union officials from running for political office, critics have accused the officials of neglecting their union duties in order to enter politics.
