Education Officials Close Down Unlicensed School In Migori County On Form One Admission Day

Admission of form one students at Midoti high school in Migori County ended was suspended on Thursday after officers led by sub-county director Wilson Amollo office declared the institution unregistered.

The school was also accused of admitting students manually without employing the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) platform as the institution and its students will not be recognised and appear on the NEMIS system.

Parents who had thronged the compound of this newly established public secondary school in Suna Central Ward of Suna East Sub-County for admission of their children were promised to be admitted to neighbouring schools if the institution will not fix its issue by Monday.

“Let the school be recognised first by the government through proper registration so that you can get funding and teachers. Without these, the school risks chances of not getting any help from the government,” explained Suna East Deputy County Commissioner Kibe Maguta who accompanied the education officials to the school.

Parents and the Suna community however vowed that they will not allow the school to be shut down, arguing that they have no money to waste on purchasing new uniforms for readmission to other schools.

Most students in the school are orphans or from a poor background, who rely on sponsorship. The parents blamed the County Director of Education for closing the school rather than helping them with the registration process.

A report by the education ministry quality assurance team noted that the school did not meet the minimum requirement to qualify as a learning centre.

The school had 3 teachers, 2 classrooms and shares toilets and playground with the neighbouring Primary school. This is against the Ministry’s minimum requirement of 7 teachers, various classrooms, 3 toilets and playing ground.
