New Salary Scales for TSC Employed Teachers

The Kenya Revenue Authority, KRA, introduced a new tax regime that will affect teachers and all civil servants. The recently introduced tax rates replace the rates introduced in April 2020.

Allowances

Despite teachers being in the same job group, their monthly, gross salaries vary depending on the locations of their workplaces. The same principle applies to their TSC allowances.

NEW SALARIES FOR TEACHERS IN GRADE B5 – PRIMARY TEACHER II

These are teachers at Grade B5 (T- Scale 5) which is the entry grade for primary school teachers. These tutors will not also get any salary increment.

NEW SALARIES FOR TEACHERS IN GRADE C1

Teacher III Grade C1 is the Entry Grade for secondary school teachers who have diploma qualifications. Their monthly salaries range between Sh.27,195 to Sh.33,994.

TSC Salaries for Grade C2 (Formerly K) The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya pays a newly hired graduate teacher more than 34,955 shillings per month in basic salary.

A teacher earning 34,995 shillings per month falls under job group K, which is now known as grade C2 and is designated as Secondary Teacher II.

The newly hired teacher is placed on probation for a minimum of six (6) months. If the teacher’s performance is poor, the probation period may be extended in some cases.

Grade C2 is an entry grade for secondary school teachers who are holders of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or its equivalent. It is also a promotional grade for holders of a Diploma in Education.

These are administrators in Primary schools (Senior Teacher II) with an enrollment of below 1000 learners. While Secondary Teacher III is an entry grade for secondary school teachers who are holders of Diploma in Education.

TSC Salaries for Grade C3 – (Former Group L)

After three years of service, the teacher is promoted to job group L, also known as grade C3. Although a diploma is required to teach in secondary school, the majority of secondary school tutors are university graduates.

The teacher receives a rental house allowance and a commuter allowance of 7,500 shillings and 5,000 shillings, respectively, under job group K (grade C2).

After all, deductions have been made, and the newly hired graduate teacher now earns 38,000 shillings. Keep in mind that this amount does not apply to those who are being deducted from their HELB Loan.

Secondary Teachers, I are teachers in Secondary schools whose grade is C3 (formerly L); This is a promotional grade for teachers in secondary school.

Senior Teachers, I are administrators in Primary schools with an enrollment of over 1000 learners with Grade C3.

HEAD TEACHERS, DEPUTY HEAD TEACHER I AND SENIOR MASTER III

Primary schools with an enrolment of below 1000 learners are headed by Head Teachers with Grade C5 (T- Scale 10). While Deputy Head Teacher I at Grade C5 (T- Scale 10) are administrators in Primary schools with an enrollment of over 1000 learners. On the other hand, Senior Master III of Grade C5 (T- Scale 10) are administrators in Sub- County and All Day schools.

SENIOR HEAD TEACHERS, SENIOR MASTER II AND DEPUTY PRINCIPALS IV

Primary schools with an enrolment of over 1000 learners are headed by Senior Head Teachers with Grade D1 (T- Scale 11). While Senior Master II with Grade D1 (T- Scale 11) are administrators in County Schools with over 540 students.

Due to the introduction of the new pension scheme, teachers’ earnings will drop further this year.

It is important to note that there are several deductions subjected to the salary of newly employed teachers.

Windows and children pension scheme, which is about 699.10 shillings, University loan recovery about 5000 shillings. It is important to note that this is only affecting teachers who benefited from HELB.

Union contribution could be Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET, Kenya National Union Teachers, KNUT, or Kenya Women Teachers Association, KEWOTA, PAYE.

Other deductions are either Sacco savings or loan repayment if the teacher is serving a loan. The good thing is, the figure is for teachers posted to work in other areas.

Teachers posted to work in former municipalities and other major towns and cities always earn better salaries since the commission takes into account the high cost of living in such areas.

The salary disparity is occasioned by the different in-house allowances to enable the teachers to catch up with the rhythm of the city life.
