Music Festival Resumes After 2-Year Break

The Kenya Music Festival will resume in schools after a two-year hiatus caused by COVID-19.

Education Principal Secretary Julius Jwan stated in a circular to regional, county, and sub-county secretaries that the government had allowed the resumption of co-curricular activities in learning institutions.

“The Ministry of Education, in consultation with key stakeholders, has decided that co-curricular activities should resume fully in all basic learning institutions.”

“In Term Two, 2022, primary and secondary school sports and music will be activated,” said Jwan.

He stated that co-curricular activities are critical to learners’ well-being and urged schools and teacher training colleges to adequately prepare for them.

From September 16 to 23, the 94th National Music Festival will be held at Maseno University in Kisumu County, with the State concert taking place on September 24 at Kisumu State Lodge.

The Kenya Science and Engineering Fair, as well as drama competitions, will be held in term one of 2023, according to the PS.

According to Acting KMF Executive Secretary Janet Langat, music directors will use the 2021 syllabus to attract additional classes in line with this year’s theme, ‘Kenya My Pride, My Future.’

“I wish to inform you that we shall be using the 2021 KMF syllabus and set pieces during this year’s festival; however, some additional set pieces will be communicated to you in the week,” said Langat.

All other preliminary festival dates, she said, will be communicated by the respective education directors.

“More details about the festival will be released in due course. Schools are therefore advised to begin training their teams as soon as possible "She stated.

The music festival is a yearly event that seeks out and develops artistic talent.
