Mount Kenya University (MKU) plans to construct an art anatomy laboratory to supplement the Thika Level V Hospital facility.

According to MKU Board Chairman Simon Gicharu, the new laboratory will help relieve congestion at Thika Level 5 Hospital and allow hospital staff and medical students to advance their research.

The university board stated that it is working to establish a separate medical facility for use by students in the College of Health Sciences.

The board has approved the construction of a Shs 1 billion ultra-modern hostel facility in Thika Town to meet the increased demand for affordable, high-quality hostels.

According to the MKU board chairman, the university has worked hard to contribute to activities aimed at strengthening the East African Community, particularly through region-based research and community outreach programs within the region.

“As a board, we are partnering with universities across the region to develop programs and projects that will contribute to regional quality addition in the education sector.

“We are also developing joint programs that shall address mental health among the youth and the elderly so that we can reduce or completely eradicate suicide, murders, destruction of property that includes burning of schools,” he said.

MKU’s Equip Africa Institute, according to Mr Gicharu, will continue to meet community needs in technical skills and knowledge among the youth.

At the same time, Gicharu announced that Ms Milly Nafula Barasa has been awarded a full scholarship to study medicine at the university. The student, who received an A-minus 13 years ago, did not enrol in university to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

According to the board chairman, the scholarship will allow the student to finally realize her dreams.

“I was really touched when I saw her story on TV. I asked myself how can we as Kenyans allow her to stay at home for so many years just because she can’t afford to join university. We shall give her the scholarship to fulfil her lifetime dream,” Mr Gicharu said.
