MIT Teacher Training College is a Ministry of Education-approved Teacher Training College. P/TC/967/13 is their registration number.

The College serves as an examination CENTRE for KNEC examinations in ECDE and P1, as well as Special Needs and the Diploma in Secondary Education.

MIT Teachers Training College is on Mbolu Malu road in Machakos town, on the first floor of the Posta building, directly across from Equity Bank and the Catholic Church (Cathedral).

The college provides a proficiency course that prepares students for both the Certificate and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Development. It also provides low-cost Certificate and Diploma programs in Early Childhood Education.

In addition, the college offers the P1 course, Special Needs Education, and the Diploma in Teacher Education.

1. Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education

This is a three years program. At the end of the course, students should achieve the following objectives

– To equip the learner with knowledge and skills in developing and utilizing ECDE instructional materials and strategies for ECDE programs.

– To enable the learner to understand the philosophical, sociological, historical, and psychological perspectives in ECDE.

– To enable the learner to acquire knowledge and skills in the administration and management of ECDE programs,

– To equip the learner with knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the provision of health, nutrition, and care for young children

– To enable the learner to understand how children grow and develop from conception to adolescence.

– To enable the learner to acquire knowledge and skills in research, monitoring, and evaluation

– To equip the learner with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and strategies in community capacity building and mobilization

– To equip the learner with knowledge and skills in all ECDE curriculum areas

– To equip the learner with skills, knowledge, and strategies to handle the emerging issues in ECDE programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

– Minimum qualifications are KCSE C plain or KCE Div. 2 or the equivalent.

– A DICESE or Kindergarten Headmistress Association or Montessori Certificate with at least a D+

– Or P1 Certificate

– Long service ECDE teacher with a KNEC proficiency examination certificate

2. PTEC: 100: PRIMARY TEACHER EDUCATION – P1 DIPLOMA

Introduction

This is a two year program, which at the end of the course students should achieve the following objectives:

– To develop the basic theoretical and practical knowledge about the teaching profession so that teachers’ attitudes and abilities be turned towards professional commitment and competence

– To develop an awareness of the principles of good human relationships in dealing with children and the community.

– To develop teachers’ ability to communicate effectively

– To create national consciousness in every teacher

– To promote awareness and appreciation of the role of technology In national development

 First Year

In the first year of the course, students study the following subjects:

PTEC: 101: Mathematics including aspects of Business Studies
PTEC: 102: English including aspects of Library Science, Mother Tongue and Drama
PTEC: 103: Kiswahili including aspects of Mother Tongue and Drama
PTEC: 104: Science integrated with Home Science and Agriculture
PTEC: 105: Religious Education (CRE / IRE)
PTEC: 106: Social Studies including Home aspects of Business Studies
PTEC: 107: Professional Studies including Special Needs Educations, Guidance & Counseling and legal issues in Education
PTEC: 108: Creative Arts (Music, Art and Craft and Drama)
PTEC: 109: Physical Education
PTEC: 110: Information Communications Technology (ICT)

Second Year

In the second year of the course, Students study nine subjects as follows;

Each student will then be required to choose four subjects from  option A or B

N/B: Students go for three sessions of Teaching Practice – one in first year and two in second year.
In the final year, a student will be required to sit for nine subjects including Teaching Practice. Information Technology will be internally examined for the time being. 

QUALIFICATIONS

– Mean grade C plain

– C plain in mathematics, English, Kiswahili, C plain in one humanities, C plain in one sciences

– Upgrade in ECDE (FROM ECDE  to DECTE) – 4 terms-course

3. DIPLOMA IN SECONDARY EDUCATION – SCIENCE OPTION

Introduction

This is a three year program, which at the end of the course students should achieve the following objectives:

– To develop the theoretical and practical knowledge about the teaching profession

– To promote national unity, national development, social equality, and responsibility

– To develop teacher awareness, competencies, and appreciation of technology in national development.

– To prepare a teacher who can

– Provide sustainable learning opportunities.

– Develop learners’ communicative skills

– Develop learner’s ability to critically think and imaginative thinking in problem-solving and self-expression.

– Develop the individual learner’s potential abilities to the maximum through a variety of creative learning experiences.

– To develop in the teacher the ability to adopt , change ad appreciate innovation

Each subject syllabus contains an introduction, course summary, suggested time allocation, general
objectives, specific objectives, content, suggested teaching and learning activities, learning
resources, and assessment method.

Note:

A candidate must take two teaching subjects and professional support subjects.

– The course duration is three years

– Practical teaching will be undertaken for two terms

– To be awarded a DSE certificate, the candidate should have successfully completed the practical teaching. (Teaching Practice)

The examination will be conducted externally by the KNEC.

A diploma in Education (Arts) is your entry into a teaching career in secondary schools. This course offers students the knowledge and experience necessary to become secondary school teachers in art subjects like

5. DIPLOMA IN SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION

This is a three year course.

The objectives of the Special needs Education is to provide the trainees with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet the needs of learners with special needs. Module I takes two terms while Module II takes three terms of the full time or school based program.

Minimum Qualifications

– Holder of P1 Teacher Training Certificate by training with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience.

– Holder of P1 Teacher Certificate through promotion by the Ministry of Education after passing through the Teacher Proficiency Course (TPC) course.

– Holder of Certificate Course in ECDE from KNEC or Ministry of Education DICECE certificate with at least D+ in KCSE or its equivalent and at least 2 years teaching experience.
