Entry Requirements

The common regulations for all Masters Degree at Kenyatta University shall apply. The common regulations for all Masters degrees in the School of Education shall apply.

The following shall be eligible for registration for the Master’s Degree programme in the Department of Educational Management, Policy and Curriculum Studies.

  1.  Bachelor of Education Degree in a related field, with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent from Kenyatta University or any recognized institution.
  2. Those with Second Class (Lower Division) may be considered on condition that they have Grade “C” and above in units relevant to their areas of specialization.

The Duration of Masters Degree Programmes

The duration of the master’s degree programme shall be as follows:

A full-time student shall be registered for a minimum of two (2) years and a maximum of three (3) years.

A part-time student shall be registered for a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of four (4) years.

No student shall be registered as full-time for more than four years without completing the programme of study or submitting a thesis/project, as may be the case without the permission of Senate.

The Structure of the Programme

The programme shall consist of:

  • Coursework, 
  • Examination and 
  • Thesis

Students opting for Coursework, Examination and Thesis shall take five (5) common units four (4) core units and one (1) elective unit making a total of ten (10) minimum units. [The thesis shall be related as eight (8) units.]

Coursework, Examination and Project

Students opting for Coursework, Examination and Project shall take five (5) Common units, eight (8) core units and one (1) Elective unit, making a total of fourteen (14) minimum units. The project shall be rated as four (4) units

Areas of Specialization

This programme is designed to cater for courses in four (4) areas of specialization as follows. Educational Administration and Policy Studies, Educational Planning, Economics of Education, Curriculum Studies

Examination Regulation

All courses shall be examined at the end of the semester in which they are taught. 

Assessment of each unit shall be done at the end of each semester by a written Examination, which shall constitute 70% of the total marks in each unit and coursework assessment tests constituting 30% of the overall assessment.

Each unit is marked out of 100%. These marks are translated into literal grades as follows:

70%-100% (A), 60% – 69% (B), 50% – 59%(C), 49% and (Fail).The pass mark in all courses shall be 50%

These students shall take a minimum of ten (10) units within the first academic year. 

Project students shall take a minimum of fourteen (14) units within the first and second academic years. 

Candidates shall be required to pass in ALL the courses from which they are registered before they can proceed to the next academic year. 

A candidate who fails to satisfy the Board of Examiners one or two units out of the five (5) units taken in any one semester shall be allowed to take a supplementary examination in the failed units when they are next offered. 

A candidate who fails a supplementary examination shall be discontinued.

A candidate who fails in more than two (2) units in any one semester shall be discontinued.

A candidate shall be required to conduct a research study and defend its findings satisfactorily.
