The trio came in first, second, and third place, respectively. Dundori took first and second place in this category, with St Mary’s Yatta finishing third.

Joytown Special School took first place in the special schools’ category.

Hilary Ruto, Ezra Mureithi, and Evans Mukeku led their special school to first, second, and third place, respectively.

The competition was last held in 2019 due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The chief guest was Prof Gachuhi Waititu, an associate professor at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Waititu is the chairman of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences at JKUAT, as well as the acting head of Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

In 1996, the Mang’u mathematics department came up with the idea of popularizing math in secondary schools to help offset the ongoing challenges that the core subject faced.

Math, according to Gachuhi, pervades all aspects of life, from vegetable and mitumba vendors to nearly all university-level subjects.

The don encouraged students to practice until they were perfect and to consult their colleagues and teachers.

“Students need to know the different topics and formulas to apply. They must not shy away from asking their classmates and teachers whenever they have challenges, then keep practicing what they have been taught,” he said.

The professor explained to the students that while many people regard math as a difficult subject, it is an important life lesson.

Prof Gachuhi stated that statistics, calculus, algebra, and numerical analysis are all used in the medical and engineering fields.

John Kuria, the chief principal of Mang’u, congratulated the contest organizers on organizing the event in such a short period of time.

Kuria urged all students to maintain their discipline in order to succeed academically. He also expressed gratitude to the sponsors and promised to include more in future events.

According to Herman Maina, the head of the math department at Mang’u, the contest has provided a forum for interaction, exchange of ideas, and generating and maintaining interest in mathematics over the years.

“We have also achieved another cardinal goal, change of attitude that only a certain caliber of students can excel in Mathematics,” he said.

He praised the program’s key sponsors, including Mount Kenya University, Zetech University, KCB (Juja branch), and the administration of Mang’u High School.

MKU sponsored the certificates and promised to continue doing so.

MKU director of corporate services and communication Boniface Murigi stated that they would like to see a holistic approach to all subjects in order to produce well-rounded students.

Isaac Kirui, a student, stated that Mang’u High is the home of Mathematics.
