Lined-Up Girls Shave Heads at School Before Form 1 Admission

Kereri Girls High School in Kisii County, Kenya has welcomed its 2023 cohort of form one students with a clean shave.

In a video that has been circulating on social media, students were seen lined up while a barber gave them a buzz cut.

The school had made an announcement during the admission process that it was mandatory for all students to have their hair shaved.

Some parents expressed their frustration over the policy, calling it “primitive” and “uncivilized.”

On the other hand, some parents supported the tradition, stating that it is part of the uniform and that it’s not about the cost of maintaining a certain hairstyle, but rather following the rules of the school.

Another parent compared the situation to when girls go to the Arab/Muslim world and have to wear hijabs.

He stated that if they can follow that tradition, they should also be able to follow the tradition of having short hair in an African school.

In addition to the clean shave, the exercise at Kereri Girls High School provided an opportunity for local businesses to prosper.

A university student from Kisii University who was participating in the shaving process revealed that he was there to earn some extra money.

He charged Ksh 50 for every student he shaved and was happy with the results so far.

Form one admission started on February 6th and was expected to last for a week.

The Kenyan government is pushing for a hundred percent transition of all students who took their KCPE exams and have placed them in secondary schools, regardless of their marks.

In conclusion, the clean shave policy at Kereri Girls High School sparked a heated debate among parents, with some opposing the practice and others supporting it.

Nevertheless, the admission process is ongoing and students are starting their secondary school journey with a fresh look.

Whether it is a tradition, a uniform requirement, or simply a side hustle opportunity, the clean shave has created a buzz among the school community.
