Let Learners Pursue Their Passions, Parents Urged.
Parents have been urged to take the lead in encouraging learners to take the time to identify and pursue their individual passions in the available learning fields.
Meru County Kenya Primary Schools Association Chapter Chairman Bernard Kiragu said during a 2021 KCPE performance evaluation meeting in Meru town that every learner had a dream to achieve and that education development stakeholders had an obligation to deliver on respective roles to enable learners to live their wish.
Kiragu praised education sector players and partners for enabling the region to achieve commendable results in the recently released 2021 KCPE results, despite challenges posed by Covid-19 since its invasion in March 2020.
He praised the efforts of the public and private school management teams in working around the clock to overcome Covid-19-related challenges and ensure that none had a negative impact on the overall school performance in the national examination.
The school’s leader urged parents to take seriously the responsibility of financially and emotionally supporting their children, as opposed to a very harmful culture in which students are frequently reprimanded for failing to meet their parents’ academic expectations.
Kiragu stated that all stakeholders in the education sector had a responsibility to ensure that Meru County was not included among areas reporting cases of depression and suicide among young learners as a result of humiliating pressure from parents, siblings, and relatives for failing to perform as expected.
He rejected the widely held belief that academic excellence was the key to all success doors in human life, stating that each individual possessed potential in non-academic areas and that no one had the authority to condemn a learner for not excelling in academic performance.

The teachers’ leader regretted that some young people were being pushed to run away from home after being subjected to a great deal of ridicule for performing below average in academic work, only to become addicted to crime, alcohol, and substance abuse due to a lack of preparedness to deal with life challenges away from home.
Kiragu reiterated that all teachers in the county, led by school heads, had agreed to remain committed to identifying academically weak learners and creating opportunities for them to achieve individual dreams for a better future in collaboration with other players in the sector.
