A primary school teacher in Nakuru County, Kenya, who was fatally struck by a train watched helplessly as the train approached him at tremendous speed.

At 7 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, Railways Deputy Police Commander Said Chungi told the media that a 64-year-old man was struck and killed by a train bound for Naivasha as he walked to work.

An eyewitness who witnessed the tragic event revealed that the man identified as Joseph was stranded on the railroad tracks and struggled to escape.

“When he was crossing, one of his legs got trapped in between the rails. The train sounded the horn as it tried to slow down but it was too late,” he stated.

“He first crossed the line and kept on going back and forth. From my own assessment, he looked very stressed,” the bystander disclosed.

The body of the deceased was ferried to the Nakuru County Mortuary where an autopsy will be conducted.

Chungi revealed that this was the third time a local resident had perished while attempting to cross the railway track at this location.

He requested that locals use caution when crossing the railway tracks and warned automobiles not to attempt unsafe maneuvers while crossing the rail.

“Do not try to compete with the train. When the locomotive is on the track, it creates a string magnetic field which can affect the operation of the vehicle or motorbike,” Chungi stated.

The police also cautioned residents against attempting to cross intersections while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In this country, train collisions are uncommon.

In September 2021, a Nanyuki-bound train collided with a soda truck at a level crossing in the town of Karatina, causing multiple injuries.
