Teachers have written to the Ministry of Education requesting the participation of teachers’ unions in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) task force.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) stated that their feedback on CBC implementation’s obstacles would be crucial.

They want Kuppet, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), and Kenya Union of Special Needs Teachers (Kusnet) to be team members.

Teachers want the group to focus on teacher preparation, the doubling of secondary school enrollment by 2023, and parental involvement in curriculum development.

Mr. Akelo Misori, KUPPET Secretary General, stated that the task force would provide a forum for airing public opinions on CBC per Article 10 of the constitution, which mandates public input in all significant decisions.

Kuppet observed that the adoption of CBC systems, which have been widely implemented in Africa, has encountered unique obstacles that must be solved for the curriculum to operate well.

Ruto stated on Tuesday that he would appoint a committee to review the CBC in the coming weeks.

The president also pledged to address the double transition of Grade 6 and Grade 8 students to secondary schools.

The West Pokot Knut stated that the previous government compelled the installation of the CBC, but the teachers were not properly familiarized.

“CBC is not there. It is only drama in class. Some things are not practical. CBC has a problem, it was rushed,” he said

He explained that implementation difficulties exist with the new system.

Mr. Sembelo mentioned that Knut is prepared to join the task force the following week and uncover everything.

According to him, the curriculum is disorganized due to a lack of resources, infrastructure, instructional materials, and teachers.

Mr. Sembelo noted that the CBC faces numerous obstacles and problems, including a shortage of teachers.

He highlighted that the new system must have a solid basis and sufficient resources.

The delocalization of teachers has badly impacted students’ performance in every county and jeopardized school learning.
