KUPPET Wants School Calender Changed Over Raila’s Protests
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) secretary general, Akelo Misori, has expressed concerns about the impact of the Weekly Azimio-led protests on the country’s school calendar.
Misori warned that the school calendar would be affected by the protests, which would also disrupt the implementation of the school curriculum. According to Misori, many boarding schools have postponed their reopening dates due to the protests.
Misori also expressed concerns that students would encounter the protestors, putting their lives at risk if the demonstration continued every week. He called for the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, to call off the protests to allow high school and primary school students to continue their education without interruptions.
On Tuesday, March 21, Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Raila Odinga declared nationwide protests every Monday and Thursday beginning March 27.
The protests were necessitated by President William Ruto’s failure to lower the price of basic commodities, open the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) servers and engage the Azimio coalition in the recruitment of IEBC commissioners.
Misori stated that the interruption of the school calendar could have a detrimental effect on students’ academic performance, especially after being out of school for nine months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also warned that the protests would further compromise the already condensed curriculum.
The KUPPET secretary-general called on the government to take action to ensure that schools can continue with their normal operations without interruption. He also urged parents to ensure that their children do not participate in the protests, as this could put their lives at risk.
In conclusion, the ongoing protests in Kenya have raised concerns about the country’s school calendar and the implementation of the school curriculum.
The KUPPET secretary-general has warned of the potential impact on students’ academic performance and called for the opposition leader to call off the protests to allow students to continue their education without interruptions.
The government has also been urged to take action to ensure that schools can continue their operations without interference.
