KUPPET Calls For Upward Review of Teachers’ Salaries and Exam Marking Rates

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) chair Omboko Milemba has called for an upward review of teachers’ salaries and exam marking rates.

Omboko says that workers who render their services should be paid commensurate with the work done and on time.

He urged the teachers’ union to reconsider the monetary value of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), given that teachers’ salaries have not been reviewed for three years, and some face stagnation in the same job group.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to spend Sh2.2 billion to promote more than 14,000 teachers who have stagnated in the same job group, including those who have attained higher qualifications.

The Commission’s CEO, Nancy Macharia, said the lack of promotion funds since the implementation of the 2021-2025 CBA has tainted the Commission’s image.

Teachers’ promotion is an urgent matter, according to the TSC, which made presentations to the National Assembly Education committee. The TSC hopes to prioritize teachers’ promotion to address stagnation issues and improve teachers’ welfare.

KUPPET has also criticized the government for owing the largest debt to secondary school teachers.

The debt includes examiners’ pay and acting allowances, with many examiners yet to receive payment two months after the release and marking of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

KUPPET chair Omboko Milemba said the government’s ballooning pending bills have caused poor living conditions for teachers.

In conclusion, teachers in Kenya, especially secondary school teachers, are owed a significant debt by the government, including examiners’ pay and acting allowances.

The debt has led to poor living conditions for teachers, who have called for an upward review of salaries and exam marking rates.

Meanwhile, the TSC plans to promote over 14,000 teachers who have stagnated in the same job group, including those with higher qualifications.
