KUPPET Accuses KNEC of KCSE Exam Leak Amid Calls for Restructuring

The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) is facing calls for restructuring or disbandment due to allegations of examination irregularities.

Parents, teachers, and other stakeholders have expressed concern that the good results schools post are often doctored.

Nelson Majimbo, a retired high school teacher, claims that whenever he raised issues about exam marking anomalies with KNEC, no action was taken, and exam makers could be victimised.

The competitive nature of education in Kenya pushes teachers into colluding with parents and candidates to cheat, according to Harrison Odoto, executive secretary of Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers.

Masinde Muliro University Vice Chancellor Solomon Shibairo believes that cheating is a result of moral decay in society and calls for a paradigm shift in the value system.

The allegations of cheating come amid a parliamentary probe into the allegations of cheating in last year’s Form Four examination.

Participants who gathered at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology feared that the illegal “motivation fee” that schools have been demanding from examination classes could be used to “buy’’ good grades.

Teachers have also claimed that exam papers were available on various social media platforms long before the opening of containers.

The Kenyan MPs expressed optimism that their report would bring sanity to the education sector.

The competitive nature of education in Kenya means that teachers often cheat to get high mean scores, as some parents will chase teachers from a school if the performance is below their expectations.

If exam cheating persists, universities could consider doing an entry exam, as the credentials of candidates tested by KNEC would be in doubt, according to Shibairo.

The situation in Canada is different, where exam cheating is hardly talked about, and society rewards and cherishes integrity.

To walk out of the mess, Kenya ought to appreciate truth and integrity, says Shibairo. The process of filing a complaint against a cheating school or candidate is also tedious as it involves doing a detailed report.
