The government’s inability to fully sponsor university education for qualified students who scored C+ and above in the 2022 KCSE exam has left many individuals responsible for funding their own education.

University of Nairobi (UoN). The University of Nairobi offers two degree courses that surpass the Ksh500,000 mark.

Pursuing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery will require students to pay Ksh521,000, while those interested in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery will face a fee of Ksh539,000.

Moi University Moi University, another institution approved by KUCCPS, charges a significant amount for certain degree courses.

Both Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Moi University come with a price tag of Ksh612,000 per year.

Other Public Universities Several other public universities in Kenya also charge over Ksh500,000 for certain degree programs.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Kenyatta University fall into this category.

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programs at JKUAT and Kenyatta University both cost Ksh612,000 per year.

Private Universities Among the private universities, Uzima University in Kisumu charges Ksh592,500 annually for a degree in Medicine.

Kenya Methodist University, a Christian-owned institution, requires students pursuing a Medicine degree to pay Ksh559,000.

Mt Kenya University offers a relatively cheaper option, with a Medicine degree costing Ksh510,000 per year.

Bachelor of Pharmacy While not exceeding the half-a-million mark, JKUAT charges Ksh492,660 for a Bachelor of Pharmacy program.

Fee Revision It’s important to note that universities are not permitted to revise their fees for a period of four years, as stated by the CEO of KUCCPS.

Conclusion As government funding falls short, many students who excelled in the KCSE exam will need to finance their university education.

Several degree courses in Kenya come with high costs, exceeding Ksh500,000 per year.
