Teachers want the salary agreement signed last year, which included no monetary benefit, to be renegotiated.
They also want the government to pay the Sh6,000 fees for continuous development training, also known as Teacher Professional Development (TPD).
Tutors also want the government to place Junior Secondary Schools in primary schools, arguing that putting them in high schools would cause chaos in already overcrowded institutions.
These are some of the most pressing demands made by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) as schools reopen.
Knut contends in its demands that, while continuous pieces of training in any profession sharpen workers’ skills and place them in a better position, the cost must be borne by the employer.
“We are keen on ensuring that the employer foots the bills for training either fully or cost shares with the teachers.
These skills are designed to benefit the employer as much as they will benefit the employee,” said the union’s secretary General Collins Oyuu.
Furthermore, the union wants the age group to attend the training sessions that will be reviewed.
Oyuu described the 30-year period required to complete the entire training as “quite long,” adding that this may be meaningless to teachers aged 55 and up.
Every year, teachers are expected to contribute Sh6,000 per chapter. Each teacher is expected to complete six modules, with each module being completed every five years. In addition, one module is divided into yearly chapters.
The teachers’ main concern, however, is the need to renegotiate the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The effects of Covid-19, according to KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori, have hit teachers hard, citing a freeze on salary negotiations.
Kuppet, he said, rejected the freeze’s rationale, seeing it as a convenient cover for the government to back out of its commitment to teachers.
Knut, on the other hand, wants the CBA revisited and the money component added within three months.

According to Oyuu, KNUT has already begun discussions with the employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) about the possibility of renegotiating the 2021-2025 CBA.
Misori, who supports the salary review, stated that in order to recover quickly from the pandemic, workers must be at the centre of policy planning and execution.
