KNUT Wants Primary And Secondary School Capitation Increased

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has asked the government to increase the free primary and secondary education capitation in order to protect schools from being auctioned due to debts.

National executive council member, Alex Dunga says most public schools are on the verge of being auctioned as the money channelled from the national treasury is not enough to provide for their needs and sort pending bills.

Dunga was speaking at Boro primary school during the launching of Alego / Usonga constituency bursary programme. The Siaya county branch chairman regretted that the government had never reconsidered schools’ capitation since FPE and FSE was introduced in 2003.

“A pen that used to cost Sh5 in 2003 when FPE was introduced is now Sh20,” said Dunga.

He appealed to lawmakers to help drive for the review of capitation for schools as a measure of ensuring equity for all children nationwide.

He accused the Education Ministry of hoarding Ksh.14 billion that the Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha said was recently released to facilitate free education.

“These institutions are reeling in debt and if the system of financing the education system cannot change, very soon all schools will be auctioned,” he said.

Also present at the meeting was Alego-Usonga MP, Samuel Atandi who called on the Siaya County Government to equip the bright but needy learners with bursaries to empower them to pursue their education dreams.
