Knut urges teachers to Support Raila For Mass Hiring
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary general Collins Oyuu has asked teachers to back Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s campaign.
Raila, according to Oyuu, has been making constant phone calls urging him to rally teachers behind his bid.
“Raila calls me every two weeks, to inquire about who the teachers are voting for. I assure him always that teachers are behind him,” he said.
Oyuu spoke at the 37th Siaya Branch annual general meeting on Saturday at Siaya Central Primary School.
He urged teachers to unite behind Raila, who plans to hire all 114,000 trained and qualified teachers who are currently unemployed.
By acclamation, the majority of the teachers in attendance agreed to his proposal.
Raila stated at the launch of Azimio’s manifesto at Nyayo Stadium that if elected, he will hire all trained teachers as soon as possible.
He claims that the learner-to-teacher ratio is extremely low because teachers handle twice or three times the number of students that should be in a given class.
The official, however, chastised Kenya Kwanza Alliance Deputy President William Ruto for making promises that will confuse teachers and the entire education system.
He claimed that Ruto’s faction promised to scrap the Competency-Based Curriculum and replace it with the 8-4-4 system.
“Choose one. Don’t confuse us as teachers with your hybrid system, which cannot work in this country,” Oyuu said.
KNUT applauded Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s pledge that if he forms the government, he will employ all trained teachers who are currently unemployed.
Odinga promises to invest heavily in education, which he says will be free for all Kenyans from primary to university, in a manifesto released on Monday, June 6, 2022.
And, in response to a teacher shortage in public primary and secondary schools, the former Prime Minister stated that his administration will address the issue by absorbing all teaching workforces.
The pledge, according to KNUT Chepkoilel Executive Secretary Sammy Bor, will help reduce the burden teachers have been carrying.
“As KNUT, we desire that the government employs more teachers to correspond with the high number of students. With more teachers, congestion in classrooms will be addressed,” Bor says.
The country currently has a teacher shortage of 114,581.
