KNUT Demand End to Protests for Uninterrupted School Calendar

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has urged for an end to anti-government protests, citing their negative impact on the school calendar.

The Knut secretary general, Collins Oyuu, has called for a dialogue between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, to address the ongoing protests.

Oyuu has emphasized that the protests have caused significant disruptions to school activities, particularly in slum areas.

The protests, which have been taking place on Mondays and Thursdays, were organized to demand reduced living costs and the opening of election servers, among other demands.

Raila Odinga has stated that the protests will continue until their demands are met. However, Oyuu has expressed concern over the impact of the protests on the education sector, pointing out that more than 1 million Grade 7 students have been affected by the riots as they proceed with the new curriculum.

He has called on all parties involved to engage in dialogue to allow for uninterrupted progress of the school calendar.

The disruption caused by the protests has been felt by students in both day schools and boarding schools.

Oyuu has highlighted the impact of the protests on students preparing for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

He has stressed that the disruptions have affected the smooth running of the education calendar, and that the students cannot afford to miss out on school activities at this crucial time.
