KNUT Blames Kuppet Over CBC Confusion as Membership Row Escalates

Primary school heads and teachers have criticized the secondary school teachers union for causing confusion in the education sector.

Thursday saw the Kenya National Union of Teachers and Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association issue a joint statement.

Collins Oyuu, the secretary general of Knut, stated that KUPPET’s sole objective is to ensure their membership growth.

“It is ridiculous and hypocritical that people are calling for the disbandment of for reasons not benefiting the proposal for the same,” Oyuu said.

Oyuu explained that for Knut, membership is less important than the future of children.

The dispute over teacher membership arose when KUPPET proposed that Grade 7 students be housed in secondary schools.

“The issue of membership is not our concern. Membership of a union is very candid where a teacher is allowed to choose a union,” he said.

Regarding the dissolution of the task force, Oyuu stated that the Presidential Working Group on Education Reforms is qualified to provide the correct direction.

“The taskforce is made up of who is who in the education sector and we can not underrate its ability when we should only make proposals for better things,” he said.

KUPPET SG Akelo Misori stated in their second interim report that the task force contributed to more confusion.

“Kuppet calls for the disbandment of the CBC task force, notwithstanding their eminence in society, the party has contributed more confusion than solutions,” Misori said.

Tuesday at a press conference, the union expressed its displeasure with the JSS transition process.

Misori warned that the future of the 1,2 million pioneer cohort is in jeopardy if no action is taken.

“There are unclear teacher management procedures that have resulted in many cases being lodged by JSS teachers,” he said.

The SG stated that it is not too late to return the students to secondary school.

Misori stated that secondary schools are better equipped to accommodate students.
