KNEC Issues Warning Over Slow Registration for National Exams

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has expressed concern over the slow registration of candidates for this year’s national tests.

CEO David Njengere has urged head teachers, principals, and parents to register candidates as soon as possible to avoid a last-minute rush.

Since the registration portal opened on February 1, the number of candidates has been low. Students have two months left to register.

This year’s registration of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is essential because it is the last to be administered under the 8-4-4 system.

After that, all primary school examinations will be conducted under the 2-6-6-3 education system. Njengere also said KNEC has released registration guidelines to ensure smooth registration and exam administration.

“Parents should also take interest to confirm that their children are registered,’’ Njengere said.

Head teachers should register school-going students in their schools transiting to their next level with the correct details, including correct spellings as documented in their birth certificates.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has warned parents against registering Grade Seven learners to sit KCPE exams.

Njengere said that all head teachers and principals should download forms, fill them, and submit the learners’ information to the Council in PDF format before the deadline.

KNEC has urged schools with fewer than 15 candidates to move their students to a registered center identified by the Sub County Director of Education. Candidates registered in multiple centers will be treated as examination malpractice.

New schools wishing to register for this year’s exam must submit a valid registration certificate from the County Director of Education, a duly filled inspection questionnaire from the Sub-County Director of Education, and a duly filled application form from the school.

In conclusion, KNEC has sent an alarm over the slow registration of candidates expected to sit this year’s national tests.

The registration exercise for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) has started, and learners interested in sitting for this year’s national exams have two months left to register with the Examination Council.

Head teachers, principals, and parents are urged to register candidates as soon as possible to avoid a last-minute rush.
