KNEC Directs Schools To Upload Assessment Scores Before 17th Dec Deadline

The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has directed both public and private schools to ensure that all grade 3, 4, and 5 assessment scores are uploaded to the online portal within the specified time frames.

Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) is a process of gathering information to determine the capability of a learner to apply a set of related knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes required to successfully perform tasks.

CBA is based on the principles of assessing learners as they use acquired knowledge and skills in a given situation. The strategy aims at providing a way of building the skills and knowledge that learners require to perform identified tasks after going through a learning experience.

Purpose of CBA The main purpose of CBA is to inform and improve the quality of education and support the long-term learning achievement of learners.

Speaking from Nairobi, David Njengere, CEO of Knec, says that for the Ministry of Education to receive meaningful feedback that can guide the necessary interventions in the education system, periodic national assessments at critical tiers in the education system are required.

Njegere also directed school administrators to ensure that materials used in assessment tasks are obtained from the immediate school environment or improvised to the greatest extent possible.

He stated that Knec has since established a national assessment centre, which has been conducting various formative national assessments.

The assessment objectives:

  • Improve learning and instruction,
  • Facilitate the identification and nurturing of every learner’s potential, Facilitate the selection of pathways and tracks in senior secondary schools
  • Provide assessment feedback to learners and other stakeholders.
  • Provide evidence to support teachers’, school administrators’, and other stakeholders’ accountability.

The examiner has also directed school principals to keep all assessment-related records. Knec announced its plan to administer Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) to grade 3, 4, and 5 learners in a circular dated October 25, 2021.
