KNEC Clarifies 2022 KCSE Exam Leakage Reports

A senior official at the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has dismissed social media reports alleging exam malpractice in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.

David Njengere, the KNEC chief executive officer, stated that the reports were untrue and misleading. He refuted claims that Kisii and Nyamira counties had produced 800 A plains. In reality, the two counties had only 81 A plains, according to Njengere.

Njengere attributed the misinformation to the circulation of false information on social media after the release of the results on Saturday. He also stated that netizens manipulated previous videos to create a narrative of cheating.

One such video featured a top candidate on a local station alleging that he had received the exam leakage early in the morning. Another video showed a woman from Trans Nzoia claiming that her son, who usually performed poorly, had scored an A in the KCSE.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly Education Committee is conducting a public inquiry into the exam results. The team, led by Julius Melly, the committee chair, is visiting Kakamega and Machakos. It is yet to release its findings.

Njengere’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of Kenya’s exam system, which has been marred by allegations of cheating and malpractice. Critics have accused KNEC of failing to take adequate measures to prevent cheating, leading to questions about the credibility of the KCSE results.

However, KNEC has insisted that it has implemented strict measures to curb cheating, including the use of biometric data and surveillance cameras in exam rooms. The council has also threatened to prosecute anyone found guilty of exam malpractice.
