The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has released instructions to supervisors, invigilators, teachers, and candidates who will be involved in examinations.

The supervisors will be responsible for ensuring that the following instructions are communicated to the teachers and candidates participating in the examination.

The teachers are advised to train their students to carefully follow the instructions below and to make them aware of the penalties for any irregularities or misconduct during the examination.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CANDIDATES

Candidates are required to adhere to these instructions closely. The general instructions to the candidates are as follows:

– The candidates should be at their seats in the Examination Room at least five minutes before the start time of the examination. All sessions will begin at 8.00 am.

– If a candidate arrives late, they will be required to provide a satisfactory reason to the supervisor. However, in most cases, a paper will not be given to any candidate who is more than thirty minutes late. Punctuality is of utmost importance for some papers, such as Shorthand.

– If a candidate receives an examination paper for which they are not registered or if the questions indicate that other materials should have been given out, they should notify the supervisor immediately.

– Candidates should carefully follow any general directions provided at the head of the paper, such as directions limiting the number of questions to be answered.

– Candidates should write their name, index number, and the name of the paper on the first page of each answer book or sheet of each set of papers they use. The index number must be written clearly in the space provided on every sheet or page of the answer book.

Candidates should write on both sides of the paper but should not use the margins. They should begin the answer to each separate part of a question on a fresh line.

– Candidates should write the number of the question clearly in the left-hand margin at the beginning of each answer. They should not copy the question, and they should use the same system of numbering as appears in the question paper. A blank line should be left after the answer to each question.

– Candidates should use black or blue ink to write their answers. They may use a fountain pen or a ballpoint pen. Pencils should only be used for diagrams. Candidates should remember that their handwriting and spelling will be taken into account, and they should bring mathematical and drawing instruments for subjects that require them.

– Candidates should read the questions carefully and avoid writing down information that is not asked for, as no marks will be given for such information.

– Candidates should not spend too much time writing on one or two questions, as this may leave them with insufficient time to answer other questions that they are capable of answering.

– When the notice to stop writing is given, candidates should arrange their answer books and sheets in the correct order (usually the order in which they answered the questions). They should ensure that all their materials have their index number written on them, fasten them together at the left-hand corner, and hand them UNFOLDED to the supervisor.

– Candidates who wish to withdraw from the examination should notify the Council before taking any papers of the examination.

he supervisors should take responsibility for communicating these instructions to teachers and candidates, and the teachers should ensure that their students are well-trained to follow the instructions.

The candidates should adhere to these instructions to avoid any irregularities or misconduct during the examination.

CAUTIONS TO THE CANDIDATES (KNEC Business Exam Timetable)

Candidates are not allowed to leave the examination room before the stipulated time, except with special permission from the supervisor. If granted permission, no candidate is allowed to take the question paper out of the room.

Candidates are advised not to leave their answers or written work in a position where other candidates can read them. Cheating in any form is strictly prohibited and any work that shows signs of cheating will not be accepted.

No form of communication between candidates or outsiders is allowed during the examination period.

Candidates are not allowed to have any material in their possession, except the question paper and materials that have been authorized by the Kenya National Examinations Council.

Only mathematical tables provided by the Kenya National Examinations Council are allowed. Slide rulers that do not have any formula or data that can give an undue advantage are also allowed. In case of doubt, candidates should consult their supervisors.

Any candidate who receives an incorrect question paper must return it immediately to the supervisor.

No writing paper, used or unused, is allowed to be taken out of the examination room. Any rough work must be done on the official answer paper or left on the desk to be collected and destroyed by the supervisor.

Any form of disorderly conduct or disturbance within or near the examination room will be taken seriously and dealt with as an examination irregularity.

Cell phones are prohibited in the examination rooms and centres. Any candidate caught with a cell phone will have their results cancelled.

Penalties for Examination Irregularities

Any form of examination malpractice will result in the cancellation of the entire subject results for the candidate. In severe cases where there is evidence of widespread irregularities in a particular centre, the results of the whole centre will be cancelled.

The KNEC Act 2012 rules and regulations for examination irregularities state that

Anyone who commits an examination irregularity in any paper will have their entire subject results cancelled, and they will not receive any results. They will be awarded an overall result of “Y.”

Anyone who gains access to examination material and reveals the contents to an unauthorized party, whether a candidate or not, will be guilty of violating section 27 of the KNEC Act 2012.

The penalty for this offense is imprisonment for up to ten years, a fine of up to two million shillings, or both.

Anyone who maliciously damages examination material will be guilty of violating section 30 of the KNEC Act 2012. The penalty for this offense is imprisonment for up to two years, a fine of up to five million shillings, or both.

Any person who presents or attempts to present themselves to take an examination conducted by or on behalf of the Council, with the intent to impersonate, will be guilty of an offense.

The penalty for this offense is imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to two million shillings, or both. Such a person will also be prohibited from taking any examination conducted by or on behalf of the Council for a period of three years.

Candidates are strongly advised to avoid any form of examination malpractice as the consequences are severe. Any breach of the rules and regulations can lead to the cancellation of the entire subject results or even criminal charges.

Therefore, candidates should adhere to the set regulations and avoid any form of cheating during the examination period.
