Kirinyaga Early Childhood Development and Education teachers have been hired permanently, and their salaries have been raised.

Governor Anne Waiguru declared that all the 410 teachers had been promoted to permanent and pensionable status.

Ms. Waiguru said her government was determined to enhance the terms and conditions of work for ECDE teachers during the handing of letters of employment to the teachers on Wednesday at Kutus county headquarters.

The lowest-paid teacher will be paid Sh22,000 per month, while the highest-paid will be paid Sh49,000 per month. Previously, teachers were paid between Sh11,000 and Sh15,000.

Ms. Waiguru remarked that when she vowed to give ECDE instructors permanent positions, some people were skeptical.

“There were murmurs and threats from some people during campaigns but I told them that I don’t say something I don’t mean. I have now fulfilled my promise to teachers,” she said.

Ms. Waiguru stated that the new service model would be implemented immediately.

She claims that the initiative will raise teachers’ pay.

She stated that the county government had set aside Sh103 million for salary payments to implement the scheme.

The county government will also use the County Pension Fund to pay for the teachers’ retirement benefits.

Ms. Waiguru stated that the decision would empower teachers, support their progress, and motivate them to provide the finest services to the county’s 15,000 learners.

She stated that her administration had helped the 198 ECDE centers over the last five years by improving infrastructure and distributing learning and teaching materials.

“A survey has shown that our continued investment in the ECDE sector has resulted to an increase in enrollment in our centers as some parents who would previously enroll their children in private centers are now settling for public ones,” she said.

She encouraged the tutors to improve their academic credentials because the new plan allows for advancement.

The teachers praised the governor for increasing wages and additional work opportunities.

“We want to thank Governor Waiguru for looking into our predicament and restoring an ECDE teacher’s dignity,” one of the teachers remarked.
