Kakamega Boys to Host Secondary Schools National Ball Games
After a four-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has announced that the national ball games will return to Kakamega county.
Kakamega High School will host the tournament in the second week of August, as well as the Term Two ‘B’ county and Western regional games.
Last year, the school did not have representation in two of its specialties, rugby and football, after the partial reopening of schools’ sporting activities by the Ministry of Education.
The KSSSA tournament also produced a new regional soccer champion in Butula Boys. The term two ‘B’ games include football, leg ball, volleyball, and indoor games for both girls and boys.
The choice of Kakamega High School as the venue for the national championship is not surprising, given that the county has endured a lackluster administration that has stifled talent development.
However, the transfer of Chief Principal Gerald Orina in January has given renewed hope for soccer and rugby talent.
Under Orina, the Green Commandos, Kakamega’s soccer team, won the 2018 KSSSA national soccer trophy and the 2019 Rugby 15s national and East Africa trophies.
While some school alumni argue that the 2018 and 2019 teams were champions before Orina’s arrival, there is no denying that his leadership revitalized the school’s sports program.
In 2019, the Green Commandos suffered a humiliating defeat in the county soccer games, which sparked anger and frustration among students.
As a result, the school curricular timetable changed, and entertainment was abolished. However, the new administration under Principal Julius Mabibili is more responsive and supportive of sports.
The school’s games master, Amos Wamanga, who doubles as the rugby coach, says that the administration is preparing a team that can compete at the national level.
The school has been attending soccer and rugby tournaments and friendly matches to gauge its progress. Although they cannot promise anything at the moment, the boys are raring to go.
Kakamega High School, under retired Principal Oliver Minishi, carved an enviable niche for itself in school games, particularly soccer, rugby, and performance arts.
A KSSSA national tournament without Kakamega school is considered incomplete, and the school is excited to host the tournament once again.
